Concussions from playing football can lead to problems later

In the short term, untreated concussions received by young athletes playing football, soccer,  ice hockey, or other contact sports, can trigger ADHD symptoms, problems with memory, and language trouble.

And what about later in life?  More and more former pro football players are suffering symptoms of Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Concussion Syndrome, and advanced premature brain aging.  Terry Bradshaw, on The Tonight Show last Wednesday night, shared that he has been under the care of Dr. Daniel Amen for the past 2 years for symptoms caused by traumatic brain injury due to multiple concussions he suffered while playing football.  ‘If I had a son today, I would not let him play football’, commented Terry.  Neurofeedback can help the brain recover from concussions.  See Terry’s interview here:

No Difference Between Depression Meds and Placebos!

Neurotherapists, using various techniques including Neurofeedback, have been encouraging dysregulated brains to change their brain wave patterns to better functioning patterns for decades.  This has aleviated symptoms such as ADHD, depression, insomnia, migraines, anxiety, seizures, loss of memory and much more.  Is this also what is happening with the Placebo Effect?  Maybe!  In a recent report, ’60 Minutes’ documented the research of a Harvard scientist who says that depression drugs are effective, but for mild to moderate cases of depression, it’s not the active ingredient that’s making people feel better.  It’s the placebo effect!  Watch the report here.

Study Shows IQ in Teenagers Can Change as Brain Changes

In a recent study done by researchers at the University College London, it was found that IQ scores in teenagers change in relation to changes in the brain.  There are many things that can change the brain, both positively and negatively.  One positive way of changing the brain is Neurofeedback.  Neurofeedback changes the brain by building more neuropathways and strengthening mylial sheaths surrounding neurons.  Read more about the IQ study here.

Cognitive Decline can Start as Early as Age 45

In a recently released paper, researchers studied the the brain’s capacity for memory, reasoning and comprehension skills (cognitive function) in 7,400 subjects between the ages of 45 and 70 and found that cognitive decline can start to deteriorate as early as age 45! There are several things that can be done to keep the brain engaged and healthy, to avoid cognitive decline. One of those is giving the brain a workout with Neurofeedback! Others would include changing your environment (such as moving to new location, changing jobs, etc). “Read more about this study”

Study Finds Neurofeedback May Help with Parkinson’s

Though there have been several studies on the use of Neurofeedback with ADHD patients, this is the first study of using Neurofeedback with Parkinson’s patients.  And the results are exciting!  This new study was conducted by researchers from Cardiff University (UK) and reported in a paper published in The Journal of Neuroscience.  The study found that patients with early stage Parkinson’s Disease could, using fMRI Neurofeedback, alter local brain activity to improve motor function.  The Neurofeedback training targeted the brain’s supplementary motor complex, with other areas, such as the cortical motor areas and the basal ganglia, also showing signs of activation during Neurofeedback.  Though this was a small study (5 experimental subjects, 5 control), it opens doors to future larger clinical studies.  The authors emphasize that this is not a ‘cure’ for Parkinson’s, but a way of dealing with the symptomology.  Read the full study here.

Disciplining ADHD Children can be Done Effectively

Disciplining children who are challenged with ADHD can be done effectively –  with some good, consistent techniques.  Here are some helpful proven techniques:

  • Establish a daily schedule.  Children (and adults) with ADHD are routine-oriented.  Establish times for homework, meals, activities, TV watching, etc.  Write the schedule down.  Children will then understand better why they are being reprimanded when they go outside the schedule.
  • When disciplining, get your child’s attention.  Turn off the TV, stop the video games, send other children out of the room.
  • Treat discipline as a teaching tool.  Be sure to teach them what proper behaviors you want them to do in certain situations.  And the next time the child exhibits those proper behaviors, be sure to reward them.
  • Pick your battles.  ADHD children are notorious for getting into lots of trouble.  You don’t want to be the police full time.
  • Be calm when disciplining.  If your child only responds to you when you’re yelling and screaming, its because you’ve taught them that that’s the only time they need to listen.
  • Follow through.  If your ADHD child doesn’t ‘listen’ to you, it may well be because you don’t follow through with the punishment.  And be sure the punishment fits the crime, and is enforceable.

Here’s an insightful article and video on discipline from Everyday Health.

Good Luck and hang in there!
